The first major cause of the Musket Wars was the introduction of European Technology, particularly Muskets. This changed the economy of Maori society, as they had no form of currency so trade was their means to gain power and ‘wealth’ This created the danger of one tribe, in this case Nga Puhi growing increasingly powerful and influential, therefore their supplies of these muskets and weaponry growing exponentially in size. In 1821 Nga Puhi leader Hongi Hika acquired 300 muskets after trading them for his gifts he received from the King of England. Muskets greatly altered the way in which Maori fought battles, as these muskets could cause far more death and destruction than previous weaponry used by the Maori. Historians such as Angela Ballara argue that the Muskets were not the cause of the actual start of the War, the war could just as easily be called ‘Potato wars’ as many Maori fought for food supply, but because of the destructive nature of the muskets, without their role the Wars could have taken a very different path. The introduction of Muskets also amplified tensions between Nga Whatua and Nga Puhi, as Nga Puhi acquired more and more muskets, other tribes particularly Nga Whatua felt threatened by the potential use of these muskets, and confrontation between these now heavily armed tribes became inevitable. The colonization of NZ by Europeans and subsequent consequences support the ‘Fatal Impact theory’, which states that impact of European society on Maori lead to the general downfall of Maori, but it is impossible to blame the Musket Wars entirely on European impact. Prior to European contact the Maori had a well-established political system between iwis. For them war was an essential part of this, as a means of declaring land ownership. Wars were fought quickly between short distances, resulting in fewer deaths. The first war fought with muskets was the battle of Moremanui in 1908, when Nga Whatua secured a victory of Nga Puhi, as they tried to reload their muskets. The leader of Nga Puhi Hongi Hika wished to execute revenge on Ngati Whatua for the defeat, thus leading to his acquisition of muskets and intertribal warfare. The conclusion can be made that the Maori pre-established political system of which war was an integral part, was a major factor leading to the intertribal warfare of the Musket Wars, but European impact was the factor that made the warfare so destructive and lead to the many fatalities. Steve Jobs believed he could, and proved not to fail. Five decades ago, a man that should completely renovate big part of every ones life, was born. This man was Steve Paul Jobs, and he changed the world. The following text is a summary of his life and his importance to the society. Mister Jobs was a rebel. A shocker? Not really, it is the crazy ones who make an impact. He was a problem-maker in school, and he got expelled several times.As a 17-year-old, the guy went on a psychedelic adventure in India – shaved his head and found him inner self. Following high school graduation in the early 70s, Jobs enrolled at Reed College, a favourite among the hippies. Although he dropped out after only a year, he continued to participate on several classes he found interesting. He pretty much did what ever he wanted. He was known for being a rude, and often times unbearably mean man with serious lack of social-skills. He was often high on LSD, which he later said was one of the top three most significant things he did in his life, and frequently â€Å"far off†.His lack of an education and social intellect would not become an obstacle in his way for success; he only needed the right friends. Steve Wozniak – a true computer-genius, was a man Jobs found interest in. A rebel in his own way, Wozniak was – tricking teachers and elderly with childish and harmless pranks. The two Steve’s were both brilliant and geniuses in their own respect. They became partners: Wozniak was the nerdy engineer, and Jobs the guy who knew how to wrap the technology into a cute box, make it human friendly and sell it to the general people.They would very soon start Apple, a branding name now bigger than â€Å"Disney†. In the garage of Mr Jobs’ stepdad, the two brilliant minds invented â€Å"Apple I†. This was the start of something big, and only few years later the company had made more machines and grown a huge fan base. Apple released their next computer – â€Å"Apple II† which sold millions, even though Jobs hated it. It was a fantastic computer with all the ports and extensions the nerds wanted, but he did not share the joy – the design did not correspond to his way of thinking.He wanted simple and clean – a typical Zen-philosophy. Wozniak, on the other hand, wanted possibilities to extend the potential of the machine, and have a customizable design. Some people agreed with Wozniak’s philosophy, other with Jobs’. A spiteful tension began to develop within the company, and Apple got dived into several divisions. One section worked on the Apple II, which frankly was the machine that held Apple in an economic balance, another worked on the overly expensive and poor selling â€Å"Lisa†, and the final section worked on Steve Jobs new darling – the Macintosh.Jobs had recently seen the commercial potential of Xerox PARC’s mouse-driven graphical user interface, a completely new type of operating system. As Picasso, the artist, once said: â€Å"Good artists copy; great artists steal†, and steal it Mr. Jobs did. Steve had paid the developers of Xerox’s operating system, just to see what kind of magic this graphical user interface was all about. Steve loved it, and made a similar product, with a few enhancements. Only a few months later Apple released a Lisa, a computer with an operating system one could use almost without reading in the manual beforehand.Sadly, Lisa cost $10. 000 (year 1983) and was way too expensive for the average-Joe. But Steve did not care; he was way into another project – the Macintosh. In 1984 Apple aired a Super Bowl television commercial titled â€Å"1984†. The film used an unnamed heroine to represent the coming of the Macintosh as a means of saving humanity from conformity –†Big Brother†/IBM the at the time biggest computer-company. These images were a reference to George Orwell’s novel â€Å"nineteen eighty-four†. The $900. 000 one minute-film directed by Ridley Scott was a success, and a typical creation of Steve Jobs.It was intelligent, critical and got people to dislike IBM – â€Å"the big blue†. The company never experienced success, despite terrific products and a new operating system. Only a year later, he acquired the graphics division Pixar Animation Studios.He put an extraordinary amount of money into the corporation, and believed in something few others did. It soon became a reality that Jobs had put his money into the right place, and as a 50 percent shareholder he also became ridiculously rich. For ten years Jobs acted as an owner and CEO for both Pixar and NeXT. In 1996, Apple bought NeXT and wanted him back as CEO. While he had been gone, Apple had kept making machines – but not great ones. The products Apple had made while Jobs was away at NeXT and Pixar were outright horrendous.They looked like every other beige product out there, and people saw no reason to buy the overpriced products with no difference from the cheaper ones offered from Dell and IBM. Therefore, Apple had lost a lot of money, and was only weeks before bankruptcy. With the reunite of Steve Jobs as CEO, this would all change. The very first thing he did as chief-in-charge at Apple was to scratch of most of the product-line, and introduce a new machine for, once again, the general masses. With the help of his colleague, design-guru Jonathan Ive, they designed the iMac.As an all-in-one, colourful and beautiful computer for everyone, and for only $1299, it was a cheap one too. The release of the iMac in 1998 was a tremendous success, and won many people over to the world of Apple. This was the start of the new Apple, a bold, fresh and innovative company that would once again change the market. A few years later, in 2001, Apple released iPod – a device that would totally change the music industry and the way people listened to music. â€Å"A device with 1000 songs in your pocket†, was the tag line.Apple made a fortune out of the iPod, and still does. They way people, especially the young, thought of Apple also changed. Suddenly Apple was the coolest brand on the planet with their original white ear buds. And the originality kept going on, and with breath-taking new products every year; Apple’s market share grew. But it was not until they released their first phone that Apple really got popular. The iPhone was a fantastic piece of technology, and was only one in the long line of successful Apple-products released after Steve’s comeback that would come.His last creation before he was done for was the iPad, a product that finally realised his dream of a computer without a physical keyboard and as few buttons as possible. What the iPad has done to the tablet market is what the iPod did to the portable music player market: redefined it, and then dominated it. In October the fifth, 2011, Steve Jobs died. As a 56 year old man he left the world with products, sleek design-philosophies and often times radical decisions many would see as too extreme. What he did to the electronic market was never revolutionary, but rather improvement – refinement of an already existing product or software. He never made something entirely new; the computer, the music player, the phone was all invented before Apple touched it. What he did was making them human friendly. Four major inventions developed during this time, set the stage for future events. These included improvements made in the manufacturing processes within the textile industry, the invention of the telephone, the harnessing of electricity, and the expansion of transportation across the country into areas that previously took days and weeks to reach (Kelly, 2010). As one of the most recognized times for technology pushing innovation, this period in history provided man with the understanding and capability to invent new and faster ways of producing, developing, and traveling. During this same period, three inventors made a lasting change on the way in which people continue to communicate, even today. Thomas Edison was the first of the most recognized inventors of the time. His inventions, which included the phonograph, the light bulb, and the motion picture, had a direct affect on Americas growth as well as its history. The second of the inventors, celebrated for his lasting contributions to communication, was Samuel F. B. Morse, recognized for how he changed the public communication system through the use of the telegraph. Morses invention revolutionized the transmission of messages, not to mention the means and distance by which they were sent and received. It allowed the public to move information at a much more rapid pace than they had previously experienced. Finally, the heralded inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, deserves equal credit among the inventors for his powerful invention that, again, altered the realm of communication (Kelly, 2010). The importance of these inventions celebrated during the industrial revolution remains apparent. The modes of communication and social interaction that began in the 19th century laid the foundation for the social networking cycle that would rapidly evolve throughout history. With these advancements in technology, e-mail steadily became more convenient and gradually gained popularity, replacing services once provided by the postal service. In considering the goods and services readily available to ordinary people via the World Wide Web, not to mention the ease and convenience of such services, one must marvel at the evolution of technology and what it has afforded us, all in such a short timeframe. Most recently, innovations in the world of social networking have made it a giant in the world of advanced online communications. As the public gains familiarity with cyberspace, the popularity of these available resources has become more prominent in the everyday world. The year 2010 has seen social networking become one of the most influential modes of communication. MySpace, introduced in 2003, remains one of the most visited sites on the web today, with sites such as Facebook and Twitter close on its heels and rapidly gaining popularity. Even with the obvious advancements and advantages technology offers everyday individuals, skepticism remains. Many believe that the evolution of technology has been a necessary component when addressing advancement and considering new ways to live our lives. Critics contend that, even with the convenience and practicality associated with the use of the innovations and technology, pitfalls exist. Sherry Turkle raised concerns pertaining to the Internet. She invested considerable time and energy engaged with her team in observations and studies focused on the negative aspects of technology and the important place that it holds in our society. Based upon their findings, Sherry and her team concluded that too many people are spending too much time online creating imaginary identities, living in a virtual reality, and spending too many hours living in parallel worlds. Sherry believes that we need to take a second look at the consequences of living in virtual worlds and how individuals can quite possibly lose their identity. She contends that we must step back and consider these dangers before aggressively moving into the future. In addition to arguments that contend that we have become victims of parallel worlds, there exists the reality that schools and classrooms have access to the Internet and have been affected by the ease and availability of technology and communication. Some would caution that the information available on computer programs and the Internet, though helpful for students living and working in today’s society, may have its disadvantages. An example of this type of concern is found when one considers such media as a PowerPoint presentation used in today’s classrooms. Although the creation of this format lends itself to more effectively presenting information, it is also a means that limits the challenge a student is afforded. One study found that although this format was successful in presenting the necessary information for students, the bullet-point outline seemed to discourage the amount of give-and-take during discussions (Turkle, 2003). One may consider that we have quite possibly become too caught up with these computer generated programs, and argue our society has gone past the point of no return. Is this the point of no return, or are we learning to live in an Internet based, computerized generation? Both our future and the future of technology are hinged on the necessity to comprehend and master cyberspace. This includes the World Wide Web and all its qualities, both good and bad. People looking for an escape or trying to find a new reality can easily find it on the web. The Internet provides a wide range of resources spanning from basic gaming to running a business. Each person who logs onto the Internet has the choice between meaningful and trivial content. This is one of the freedoms afforded us through the World Wide Web. This invention, followed shortly thereafter by online service, public access to the Internet, and finally, the development of the World Wide Web, were steps in a progressive chain that would eventually take people into the future. Once the public understood how to access the web, communication took on a new look. E-mail became a major communication tool, weblogs became a venue for people to chat and speak their minds, and then websites such as MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube began to catch on as people used these sites to communicate as well as locate one another. The negative aspect of this new venue seems to be the amount of time spent on their computers and less time interfacing with other humans. Technology and innovation are necessary for humans to advance. Although some would argue that this is creating a society of introverts, I would argue otherwise. The technology that we use today is driven by innovation, and innovation is the key ingredient necessary for people to recognize a need, and then fill it. One could argue that they go hand-in-hand. As long as man has existed on earth, advancement has been accomplished by some type of technology. Dating back to the stone age, it is evident that technology existed in the simplest form as a spear or bow and arrow, which were used throughout most of the populated earth. Innovation provided a way for the weapons to be sharper and faster. Evidence of these innovations exists in the form of cave paintings spanning from Australia to areas in southern France and northern Spain. Although the date of the invention of the potters wheel, the bow drill, and the pole lathe is unknown, some speculate that it was in the Late Neolithic Period. These invented and refined items helped the people of that period to fish, hunt game, and gather food. In the 19th century, the industrial revolution had a direct affect on the economic development of the United States as well as Britain and Europe. Four major inventions developed during this time, set the stage for future events. These included improvements made in the manufacturing processes within the textile industry, the invention of the telephone, the harnessing of electricity, and the expansion of transportation across the country into areas that previously took days and weeks to reach (Kelly, 2010). As one of the most recognized times for technology pushing innovation, this period in history provided man with the understanding and capability to invent new and faster ways of producing, developing, and traveling. During this same period, three inventors made a lasting change on the way in which people continue to communicate, even today. Thomas Edison was the first of the most recognized inventors of the time. His inventions, which included the phonograph, the light bulb, and the motion picture, had a direct affect on Americas growth as well as its history. The second of the inventors, celebrated for his lasting contributions to communication, was Samuel F. B. Morse, recognized for how he changed the public communication system through the use of the telegraph. Morses invention revolutionized the transmission of messages, not to mention the means and distance by which they were sent and received. It allowed the public to move information at a much more rapid pace than they had previously experienced. Finally, the heralded inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, deserves equal credit among the inventors for his powerful invention that, again, altered the realm of communication (Kelly, 2010). The importance of these inventions celebrated during the industrial revolution remains apparent. The modes of communication and social interaction that began in the 19th century laid the foundation for the social networking cycle that would rapidly evolve throughout history. Most recently, innovations in the world of social networking have made it a giant in the world of advanced online communications. As the public gains familiarity with cyberspace, the popularity of these available resources has become more prominent in the everyday world. The year 2010 has seen social networking become one of the most influential modes of communication. MySpace, introduced in 2003, remains one of the most visited sites on the web today, with sites such as Facebook and Twitter close on its heels and rapidly gaining popularity. Even with the obvious advancements and advantages technology offers everyday individuals, skepticism remains. Many believe that the evolution of technology has been a necessary component when addressing advancement and considering new ways to live our lives. Critics contend that, even with the convenience and practicality associated with the use of the innovations and technology, pitfalls exist. Sherry Turkle raised concerns pertaining to the Internet. She invested considerable time and energy engaged with her team in observations and studies focused on the negative aspects of technology and the important place that it holds in our society. Based upon their findings, Sherry and her team concluded that too many people are spending too much time online creating imaginary identities, living in a virtual reality, and spending too many hours living in parallel worlds. Sherry believes that we need to take a second look at the consequences of living in virtual worlds and how individuals can quite possibly lose their identity. She contends that we must step back and consider these dangers before aggressively moving into the future. In addition to arguments that contend that we have become victims of parallel worlds, there exists the reality that schools and classrooms have access to the Internet and have been affected by the ease and availability of technology and communication. Some would caution that the information available on computer programs and the Internet, though helpful for students living and working in today’s society, may have its disadvantages. An example of this type of concern is found when one considers such media as a PowerPoint presentation used in today’s classrooms. Although the creation of this format lends itself to more effectively presenting information, it is also a means that limits the challenge a student is afforded. One study found that although this format was successful in presenting the necessary information for students, the bullet-point outline seemed to discourage the amount of give-and-take during discussions (Turkle, 2003). One may consider that we have quite possibly become too caught up with these computer generated programs, and argue our society has gone past the point of no return. Is this the point of no return, or are we learning to live in an Internet based, computerized generation? Though much more direct, Jack uses his power to threaten the boys on Ralphs side, such as Samneric, to hail to savagery and chaos, much like Abigail did to Mary. He dominates the island, getting what he wants, and eliminating those such as Piggy and Ralph, who stand in his way. Abigails tactic of lying, manipulating fear and abusing her power in court grants her the same reward of getting her way, and pushing aside enemies like Elisabeth. The only difference is that Abigails actions come with far bigger consequences, more than Parris, Putnam or Danforth, fleshed out on a larger scale of victims who fell in the face of her machinations. Moreover, the influence of companies especially of multinational corporations has tremendous impact in the society that could actually inflict change upon them. This situation is greatly applicable in the case of the South African Investment. Texaco and Standard Oil, presently known as Chevron are the two major stockholders in the Caltex Petroleum Company. Each company owns 50 percent of the total stocks of Caltex. The company has dealings with the South African Government as the country is the primary source of oil that allows them to produce various petroleum products. In the same manner, South Africa also largely benefits from foreign investors because they contribute a huge portion to the country’s income. Caltex is the largest American company that invested in the country. Being the case, the company has a vital position in the economic robustness in the company and their decisions and actions would greatly affect the situation of the country. In line with this, advocate groups wants to use this strategic position of the company in order to further their cause of eradicating or at the very least addressing the issue of apartheid in South Africa. A decision or action is perceived to be ethically justifiable when it gave greater amount of benefit for the most people concerned (National Endowment for Financial Education, 2006). In the case of the Caltex plant expansion I deem that this would have more benefits rather than costs. First of all, the establishment of foreign companies in South Africa also helped improve the situation of the black population. This is observable in the improvement of the real earnings of black industrial workers that also aid in the lessening the gap between the white and black incomes. The expansion of Caltex would actually further enhance these benefits for the black people. Furthermore, if Caltex would removed its investment from the country it would hardly effect the black majority since all the benefits they from the foreign company would be lost. On the other hand, there is still a possible violation of moral rights as well as injustices against the blacks. This could be proven by the fact that even though adhere to the Sullivan code that would further improve the situation of blacks and uphold their rights it is still not binding since it still have to work within the South African law. Moreover, I would also think of the welfare of the majority of the stakeholders involved. On the first resolution, I would vote against the proposal of terminating Caltex operations on South Africa. I deem that ceasing operations in the country would bring detrimental effects to the company because the oil obtain from the country has an important role in the robustness of the company. In relation to this, it would also affect numerous people who would lose their jobs, which includes the black workers in South Africa. Moreover, such action would not make any substantial change in the issue of apartheid since there are still other foreign investors in the country and the government has other means to survive even if Caltex terminate its operation. I would also vote against the second resolution that requires Caltex not to sell its oil products to the police and military of South Africa. Based upon the South African law, refusing to cater petroleum products to the armed forces of the country is a clear violation of the law. As such, violating this rule would clearly put Caltex in a disadvantageous position that could threaten the operation of the company in the country as well in other nations. It could also be the cause for the unemployment of large numbers of its workers. Another reason is that doing so might only put the blacks’ citizens in a bad situation because the government might further exploit the blacks especially during such time of crisis for the country. Contrary to my previous positions, I would vote in favor of the third resolution that would ask the South African government to implement the Tutu principles. Caltex has established its important role in South Africa especially during the time when OPEC established an oil embargo in the country. As such, Caltex has the capability impose demands upon the South African government and they could do so by asking the implementation of the Tutu principle. This is a good way to improve the situation of the blacks in a sound and legal manner. There is a huge possibility that the South African government would grant it especially if they would analyze the situation that they are in. South Africa has a lot to lose if they would have conflict with Caltex while they are facing a challenging situation. By approving this resolution, many stakeholders would benefit from it, not only the blacks but also the company since they would have better relationship with those who advocate anti-apartheid issues and this could also boost their image of addressing societal issues. The managers of Texaco and Chevron should respond to these resolutions in a manner by which they would take into account the maximum benefit that all stakeholders could achieve from the decision. Being the case, they should also vote against the two resolutions and approved of the last. The managers should respond in such way because doing so would be beneficial to the majority of the people involve and this would also address the social issue of apartheid. Lastly, the management has a responsibility in making sure that the whole operation of its business is running smoothly. Their concerns should not solely be based upon the high income returns because they would not achieve such if they do not address the problems that are affecting their business.
